If you’re flying into John Wayne Airport you will now have more ground transportation options available. The Orange County Airport is one of the first large airports in the area to permit smartphone based ride sharing services to operate along with taxis and shuttle buses.

Before this decision, passengers flying out of the airport could be dropped off by these services but arriving passengers had to cross a busy boulevard to meet up with a ride-sharing service. Due to concerns over insurance and background checks they weren’t allowed to pick passengers up at the airport curbside. California regulations do not allow internet ride services to operate at airports unless they are given authorization by the local airport authority.

For now, ride-share drivers will not be permitted to wait at the airport to be ‘hailed’ by passengers. Instead they are only permitted to enter the airport if the pickup has already been requested and confirmed.
