The Orange County Airport has recently launched an improved flight tracking system, Volans, available through the airport’s official website: www.ocair.com/communityrelations/flighttracking/. The user-friendly 3D Java application makes it easier for the public to view flight information online at any time of day. The flight tracking data can be viewed in satellite or street map layers. Volans has an address locator which allows users to identify the location of specific addesses such as a home or office in relation to a specific flight. The view from the cockpit button allows a user to watch the flight from the pilot’s point of view in the cockpit.

Learning to Fly at John Wayne Airport

There is currently a demand for flight lessons around the country. As pilots are getting older there are projected pilot shortages in the future and with helicopter tourism and more law enforcement and news media choppers in the sky the demand for pilots continues.

A basic pilots license costs about $11,000 and takes about 40 hours to earn. A commercial license on the other hand costs about $60,000 and requires 1,000 to 2,000 hours of flight time. There’s no better time to learn to fly than now. Costs will continue to rise and the need for logged hours in flight means the sooner you start the better.

If you’d like to learn to fly at John Wayne Airport, you’re in luck. There are a number of flight training centers located at the airport.

Orange County Flight Center is an FAA approved flight school located at Orange County’s John Wayne Airport since 1980.

Orange County Flyers, Inc is one of the oldest flying clubs in Southern California, founded in 1959.

Royal Aviation has been providing flight lessons at John Wayne Airport since 1976.

Sunrise Aviation is a flight training academy which has operated at John Wayne Airport for over 35 years.
